For us, compliance with all legislation related to environmental management is a given.
The company has already committed R83.5 million towards sustainable environmental management. This will be directed towards key focus issues that include:
- waste management
- rehabilitation of existing alien-invaded wetlands
- addressing groundwater impacts on catchment areas
- a water-treatment plant
- stormwater management
- tarring roads
- planting trees/replacing eroded topsoil
Several specialist studies have been conducted in line with Department of Environmental Affairs and Department of Water and Sanitation requirements.
The baseline wetland assessment was conducted by a registered surveyor in July 2013 and submitted to the Department of Mineral Resources, in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum. Resources Development Act, 2002 (Act No 28 of 2002), on 17 October 2013. It was also submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs, in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No 107 of 1998), on 6 January 2014.
Subsequently, a biodiversity assessment was conducted for an alternative discard dump in February 2014, and submitted to the Department of Mineral Resources, in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, on 4 March 2104.
An additional wetland assessment was conducted for a preferred surface infrastructure area in June 2014, and submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs, in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, on 15 September 2014. It was available for public review for 41 days. After consultation with the Department of Mineral Resources, and following a wetland demarcation study on 7 November 2014, a wash plant was removed and a discard facility was excluded.
Recently on the basis of DMR consultation process on MR granting letter dated 19th September 2014, Minister DMR issued Mining Right Grant letter on 14th April 2015 .
Stakeholder Engagement Process led the EAP’s recommendation for the Best Environmental Option wherein wash plant has been removed & no discard facility. Accordingly the wetland demarcation study along with land surveyor was carried out by SAS on 7th November 2014.
